"أرذل العمر" هي القصة التي تفتتح المجموعة، كتبت على طريقة المنولوج الداخلي لرجل ولد وعلى لسانه لعنة من ابد. عاش ديناه تعباً بعد تعب، مضى في حياته لأنها قدر محتوم، أو كتاب مكتوب. لقد قبل بها، تابعها، لأنه كان يعتبر العمر كتاباً يكتبه الإنسان بوعي وإرادة وتصميم، وأن سني عمره تحسب بصدق التعبير، ولكنه لم يصدق أنه سيصل في يوم من الأيام إلى أرذل العمر ولن يتبقى له إلا الماضي الجميل عبر ما خزنته ذاكرته من أول العمر إلى أرذل العمر.
