لقد اعتنى العرب بالأمثال منذ القديم، فكان لكل ضرب من ضروب حياتهم مثل يستشهد به، فكانت الأمثال مرآة صادقة لكل قوم، تتجلى فيها أخلاقهم وعاداتهم وتكون شاهد عدل على لغتهم.
وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع "إسماعيل اليوسف" أمثال العامة لأنها أقرب إلى أسماع الناس وقلوبهم، على اختلاق طبقاتهم، ذلك أن العامة يلجأون كثيراً إلى استعمال الأمثال في أحاديثهم، فقلما يقصون حديثاً، أو يعرضون أمراً إلا أيدوه بمثل.
والأمثال الفلسطينية، بالإضافة إلى كونها عنصراً هاماً من عناصر الأدب الفلسطيني، فهي تاريخ لا يرقى إليه الشك في تبيان الحالات النفسية والسياسية والإجتماعية – كأية أمثال في أية أمة – التي عاناها الشعب الفلسطيني خلال حقب مختلفة من الزمن. فهناك أمثال ظهرت إبان الحكم العثماني، وأمثال أخرى برزت للوجود أيام الإنتداب البريطاني، الذي كان السبب في كل ما أصاب فلسطين من ويلات وكوارث. وأمثال تناقلتها ألسنة الناس مع الثورات المتعاقبة في سبيل التحرير والإستقلال، ومقاومة الغاصب المعتدي.
هذا وقد سلك الباحث في ترتيب الأمثال في هذا الكتاب، وفي الكنايات التي تلته، طريقة الميداني في "مجمع الأمثال" ذلك بأن اعتمد الحرف الأول من المثل بعد إسقاط "الـ" التعريف إذا وجدت، مثل: "الرفيق الردي مثل الجرب يعدي" و "العتاب هدية الأحباب" فالأول نجده في "الراء" والثاني في "العين" بعد حذف "الـ" التعريف، وهكذا.
ومن هذه الأمثال إخترنا لك:
أرض ولدت عليها، لا تفرط فيها.
أرقص للقرد في دولته.
إذا تفرقت الغنم قادتها العنزة الجربا.
حط إيدك في إيد أخوك يصيروا الناس يهابوك.
عُمِرْ النسوان ما تربي عجلْ ويحرث.
لا هم إلا هم الفلسْ ولا وجع إلا وجع الضرسْ.
الوجه البشوش نعمْ من اللهْ.
نفّع صاحبك بشي ما يضركْ.
