تحتل الأمثال في التراث الشعبي الفلسطينية مكانة خاصة، فهي في مضمونها مما تناقلته الأجيال عبر آلاف السنين، والتصقت بحياتهم، وعبرت عن حالاتهم المختلفة، وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع محمد علي أبو حمدة ما يقارب المائتي مثل من الأمثال العامية الفلسطينية منها أمثال قروية وأخرى أمثال حديثية العهد، يقدمها للقارئ العربي يكشف بها عن مكنونات التراث الفكري والثقافي الفلسطينية وبوصفها دراسة لنفسية أجدادنا من خلال أقوالهم وأغانيهم ومسامراتهم.
وفي هذا العمل حرص المؤلف على أن يفرد لكل موضوع أمثاله فيقول: "وقد حرصت على أن أفرد هذه الأمثال عن الأقوال الدينية والوصايا المأثورة والأمثال الفصحى، ولم أكن أقبل المثل إلا بعد أن يكون عليه شية من غبار القرية وعاميتها. وإذا تبين للقارئ الكريم أن كل القرويين متعلمين كانوا أو أميين لا يعجزهم فهم الكثير من فصيح الأمثال ومن آي القرآن الكريم والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة أيقن غنى ثروة القروي من الأمثال العامية وبالتالي غنى تعبيراته من جلاء الغرض النهووضح الدلالة..".
من هنا عمد المؤلف إلى كتابة المثل بنفس النص واللغة ثم يعمل على ترجمته للغة العربية الفصحى بهدف بيان ما فيه من أغراض وكنايات ونكات بلاغية ومرامٍ بعيدة. فالأمثال في النهاية هي جزء من الحياة الاجتماعية لأي شعب من الشعوب وخاصة في حالة (فلسطين) فيه بمثابة تقريب لكل فلسطيني وعربي مهما باعدت بينهم المسافات ومهما حاول الاحتلال الصهيوني تغيير ملامح الحياة العربية في المناطق المحتلة، والأمثال هي أكبر دليل على عراقة هذا الشعب.
من أمثال الكتاب اخترنا لك: "ابن آدم بوكل الدنيا والدنيا بتوكله: يضرب لمن ينال عزاً وجاهاً ثم يطويه الموت فكأنه لم يكن. "من طين بلادك حط على اخدادك: يضرب في الحثّ على الزواج من فتيات البيئة والأهل. "لا ناهرة ولا منهورة، من أين بدها تخاف العورة؟": أي أن المرأة لا يترك حبلها على غاربها.
