تعد الشكلانية الروسية حركة أدبية نقدية وفنية إيجابية ومثمرة ومتميزة، عاشت الحداثة النقدية ما بين 1915 و 1930، قبل أن تعيشها أوروبا الغربية في سنوات الستين والسبعين من القرن الماضي، وأهم ما يميز النظرية الشكلانية أنها كانت تدعو إلى تأسيس علم الأدب، موضوعه هو الأدبية، مع تصنيف الأجناس والأنواع والأنماط الأدبية، في ضوء معطياتها البنيوية والشكلية والجمالية، ثم دراسة الأنساق الأدبية في تطورها الشكلاني، ثم دراسة وظائف اللغة، ولا سيما الوظيفة الجمالية التي تتجاوز البعد المادي إلى البعد الجمالي والإحالي.
هذا، وقد مرت النظرية الشكلانية، في تعاملها مع الظاهرة الأدبية، بمجموعة من المراحل؛ حيث كانت تتعامل مع الأدب تعاملاً تقنياً جافاً، ثم اعتبرته كائناً حياً، ثم نظاماً ونسقاً بنيوياً، ثم كائناً فنياً وجمالياً.
وبعد ذلك، حاولت ربطه بالمجتمع أو العالم الخارجي، ضمن تصور جدلي ديناميكي منفتح ووظيفي.
