يدرك دارسو العربية وقواعدها أن الدخول في عوالم الخليل وسيبويه والفراء ومن تبعهم، ليس بالأمر اليسير، فالمصطلح النحوي المنغرس فينا بدلالته منذ الدراسة الثانوية وحتى في السنوات الأولى من الدراسة الجامعية، سيشكل عقبة كأداء في فهم هؤلاء، فالصفة، والموصول، والحال، والخبر، واسم الفاعل، والفعل، والفاعل، والمنقوص، والناقص، والظرف، والعلم... على بساطة دلالاتها في مخزوننا، لا تعني في كتبهم -على الغالب- الحد الذي نعرفه، فإن أضفنا إلى هذا الإشكال أسلوبيتهم/مصطلحاتهم التي هجرتها الكتب القواعدية المعاصرة، أدركنا أننا نقتحم عوالم صعبة على الإدراك، مستعصية على الفهم، تسهم في الجنوح عن هذا العلم، وتصمه بالتعقيد.
ألقى المعجم أضواءً على عقبتين شائعتين في المصطلحية القواعدية الكلاسيكية، وهما: الاشتراك والترادف، فالمصطلح. الواحد، وعند المصنف نفسه، له دلالات مختلفة، والدلالة الواحدة، يعبر عنها المصنف بمصطلحات مختلفة، وتتداخل مصطلحات النحو بالصرف بعلم الأصوات، لتشكل معاً موطناً للصعوبة، حاولنا تذليله ما استطعنا إلى ذلك سبيلاً.
