في عراك الحياة المتواصل وحيال أعبائها ومسؤولياتها الجسام وهمومها ومتاعبها الكثيرة تنتاب الإنسان الكلالة، وتدب في نفسه الملالة والكآبة. فتغتر من جراء ذلك همته وتهن عزيمته. عندئذ يحتاج المرء إلى ما يذكي حماسه، ويجدد نشاطه، ويشحذ عزمه على متابعة السير وتخطي العقبات التي تعترض سبيله، فتراه يفزع إلى ما يحقق له ذلك من مختلف أصناف اللهو ووسائل التسلية والترفيه المتاحة له في محيطه وعصره. ولقد أدرك السلف الصالح من أكابر كتابنا وأدبائنا بثاقب ذهنهم وعميق نظرهم حاجة البشر إلى الترويح عن النفس، فراحوا يرصعون آثارهم الجليلة ومصنفاتهم الجدية بكل طريق ونادر ومستملح من الأخبار والروايات والأحاديث والحكم والأشعار، بل منهم من كرس مؤلفات بأكملها لهذا النوع من الأدب الترفيهي دون غيره.
وإذا كان هذا شأن الجلة من المؤلفين والأدباء المشهود لهم بالنبوغ والسبق كالجاحظ وابن قتيبة وأبي الفرج الأصفهاني وابن عبد ربه الأندلسي وأبي منصور الثعالبي وكثيرين غيرهم فأحرى بكتابنا المحدثين أن يقدموا هذا النوع من المختارات وبعد وقوفه على كتب التراث والاطلاع على ذخائره النفيسة يجمع منه قطوفاً وباقات أدبية جميلة، فكاهية اللون، نادرة في بابها، مفيدة في مضمونها، جميلة في لفظها ومعناها، انه الأدب الذي تأنس به النفوس، وتهمش له القلوب، وتتغذى به العقول، وتسمو به العواطف، ويستقيم به اللسان العربي وتعميماً للفائدة المرجوة من هذه المقتطفات، عنى جامعها بشرح غير المأثور من الألفاظ والمفردات، مجلياً ما خفي من معاني هذه المختارات وما أغلق من إشاراتها، دون إغفال النص على المواضع التي اقتبست منها تيسيراً على من شاء الرجوع إلى تلك الأصول، واضعاً عناوين لها، ومنسقاً مادتها في خمسة عشر باباً شملت فئات شتى من المجتمع الإسلامي في عصوره وبيئاته المختلفة. وقد كان حريصاً على إثبات هذه الطرائف والنوادر كما وردت في مصنفات أصحابها من غير أن يعرض لألفاظها وأساليب صياغتها بشيء من الزيادة أو الخوف أو التبديل وذلك حفاظاً على نكهتها الأصيلة وعلى بيئتها اللغوية الحضارية.
