أجمع مؤرخو الأدب أن أبا العيناء والذي كان كفيفاً كان نصيحاً بليغاً، من الظرفاء المعروفين، وكان أحدّ الناس خاطراً وأسرعهم جواباً، وأبلغهم خطاباً، وظرفه قربه من مجالس الخلفاء والوزراء والقصاة، وحببه إلى الكتّاب والعامة، وكان الخليفة المتوكل أوسع له مكاناً في قصره، ورويت عنهما أخبار ونوادر كثيرة، كما كانت لأبي العيناء محاورات ومكاتبات ومهاجاة وأخبار كثيرة مع أعلام عصره تظهر ما يتحلى به من ثقافة وظرف وسطوة لسان. في هذا الكتاب يجمع انطوان القوّال لمحاً من نوادر هذا الشاعر من خلال ديوانه الذي جسد توق الإنسان إلى الحياة منتصراً على عاهته وضعفه.
