معجم شامل من أمثال العرب السائرة وحكمهم المأثورة. اعتمد في تصنيفه وتخير مادته على مائتي مصدر ونيف من مصادر الأمثال والأدب واللغة والتاريخ والحديث والسير والتراجم وغيرها من ذخائر العرب ورتب مادته حسب الموضوع، مما يتيح للقارئ الاطلاع على مجمل الأمثال التي قيلت في غرض من الأغراض. وقد اشتمل على أمثال وحكم نثرية نادرة، وكذلك على أبيات حكمية فريدة، يترنم بها عشاق الأدب الشعر. كما تضمن تفسيراً لغير المأنوس من مفردات المثل النثري أو الشعري، مع شرح معناه وبيان مضربه وسرد قصته متى اقتضت الضرورة ذلك. وقد وثقت مادة المعجم توثيقاً دقيقاً بالنص في حواشيه على المصادر والروايات المختلفة للمثل النثري أو الشعري، كما عمد إلى بيان الأصول الأجنبية لبعض الأمثال التي استعارها العرب من الشعوب والحضارات الأخرى. وذيّل بثمانية فهارس أفردت للآيات القرآنية والأحاديث النبوية، وآيات الكتاب المقدس، والأمثال والحكم، والشعر والقوافي، وأنصاف الأبيات، والأعلام، والمصادر والمراجع.
