أرسى الإنسان من منطقة الشرق الأدنى القديم أصول الحضارة الإنسانية المستقرة في جميع مظاهرها المادية والمعنوية منذ بداية استقراره فيها، وقد اتفق العلماء على أولوية هذه المنطقة على بقية أجزاء العالم في الشرق والغرب في التوصل إلى مرحلتي إنتاج الطعام والمدنية، ولذلك اتجهت أبحاثهم إلى أجزائها ذات الأثر الخالد في سجل حياة الإنسان ومن العلماء الذين بذلوا جهداً كبيراً فيها ج.كونتتو مؤلف هذا الكتاب، فقد أنتج طائفة من الكتب والمراجع ما يجدر بالباحث في تاريخ حضارة هذه المنطقة دراسته والاعتماد عليه. كما قام أيضاً بالجغرافي في صيدا في سنة 1914 وسنة 1920.
وكتاب الحضارة الفينيقية بالذات له أهميته الخاصة لأن منطقة سوريا والساحل الفينيقي وفلسطين كانت مكان التقاء لكافة الحضارات العراقية القديمة، السومرية، الأكادية، والبابلية والآشورية، والحضارة المصرية ثم الحضارتين اليونانية والرومانية، ولذلك تأثرت هذه المنطقة بكافة هذه العناصر الحضارية في المجالين المادي والمعنوي. وقد عرض كونتينو هذه النواحي المختلفة وأثرها في الحضارة الفينيقية. وذلك في ستة فصول: تناول أولها موضوع الدين، أما ثانيها فتطرف للفن، وثالثها خصص للفن الجنائزي، ورابعها عالج الزراعة والملاحة والتجار، وتناول الخامس الحروف الأبجدية، واللغة الفينيقية، أما سادساً فعالج موضوع فينيقية وبلاد اليونان، وأصول الحضارة الفينيقية.
