كانت العلاقات بين الشرق والغرب وما زالت، موضع اهتمام المؤرخين وعلماء الآثار واللغويين ومؤرخي الفن. ويصعب الوقوع على دولة أوروبية توثقت علاقاتها بالشرق مثل اسبانيا الواقعة على الطرف الغربي من تلك القارة. فعن هذا البلد بالذات قال المستشرق السوفياتي الشهير أ.ي.كراتشكوفسكي؛ ((في إسبانيا يضرب لنا الماضي مثلا واضحا عن هشاشة الحدود بين الشرق والغرب، عند التطرق إلى تطور الثقافة العالمية)) فخلال الثلاثة آلاف سنة الأخيرة، انتشرت، في حقبتين من الزمن، حضارة شرقية نموذجية على شبه جزيرة البيرنيه، تجلببت بجلباب من ملامح خاصة. وقد حصل ذلك للمرة الأولى في العصور القديمة، حين استوطن الفينيقيون في الجنوب والجنوب الشرقي الاسباني، وللمرة الثانية حين أصبح شبه الجزيرة مسرحا لتطور الحضارة العربية الرائعة أبان القرون الوسطى. وما يعنينا هنا هو الحقبة الأولى. لقد قامت في المستعمرات الفينيقية في اسبانيا حضارة اعتبرت فرعا من الحضارة الفينيقية الشرقية، وكان لها أثر كبير على تطور الحضارة الأوروبية، ولا سيما الاسبانية القديمة. ويستحيل علينا فهم تطور الفن والكتابة في إسبانيا القديمة إذا نحن أغفلنا اسهام الفينيقيين في هذا التطور. أما طقوس العبادة عند الفينيقيين الإسبان، فقد كانت في أساس ديانة العالم القديم. وكانت ثقافتهم المعتبرة جزءا من الثقافة الفينيقية، على صلة وثيقة بالحضارة الأم. وفي الوقت عينه كان نصيب الشرق من علاقاته بالغرب وفيرا على الصعيدين المادي والروحي. وترتدي دراسة هذا الموضوع أهمية كبيرة، إن لناحية الثقافة الفينيقية العامة الفريدة، أو لناحية العلاقات الثقافية بين الشرق والغرب.
