هناك خلاف في إسمه، هل هو السر الخفي نسبة إلى الخفاء، أي أن معانيه كانت مختفية عن القارئ، أم السر الخفي نسبة إلى الحق، أي أن ما فيه حق؟ وقد قال مؤلفه "عبد الحي الكتاني" في آخر الكتاب.
وقد جاء هذا المكتوب الذي سميته بـــ "السر الخفي الامتناني الواصل إلى ذكر الراتب الكتاني" شرحاً ينبئ عما وراءه جمعاً ووعياً لفرائد التفسير والحديث والتصوف والتاريخ والإسناد واللغة والأنساب، بحيث لا يخلو مطالعه من أي جنس كان عن فائدة لابد أن يقوم بها عنه، مع أنه بُني على الاختصار ما أمكن، إذ ما من مقام إلا ويتسع المجال فيه لو تكلمنا على تفاصيله، لكن أومأنا إلى ما لابد منه في كل موطن بأمر كلي تقع به المنفعة، ويندرج فيه كل تفصيل وإجمال، وقد إلتزمت أن أنقل في كثير من المباحث التي عميت فيها عين المعترض عن الطرق الشهيرة بالمغرب وأكابر الصالحين به، فقل أن لا يجد أهل كل طريق أو فريق فيه ذكر أحد من أئمتهم، وعلمت على أن لا تعرض فيه أيضاً لما بسط الأستاذ - أي والده - الكلام فيه في مؤلفاته، أو بالوجه الذي تكلم فيه، فوقع الوفاء بذلك بحسب اطلاعي القاصر وذهني الفاتر، وكان الفراغ منه في منتصف ليلة الجمعة السابع عشر من جمادي الثانية عام أحد وعشرين بعد ثلاثمائة وألف، ثم أضفت إليه بعد ذلك حين الطبع زيادات من فوائد رحلتي الحجازية، فزاد على أصله زيادة وافرة أوجبت انفراد الأول عن هذا وإن اتحدا في الإسم.
