شهدت العقود الأخيرة ثورة عارمة في المجالات العلمية والتقنية شملت العديد من المجالات وعلى الأخص مجالات الاتصالات والمعلومات واكتشاف الموارد الطبيعية التي تختزنها الأرض والمحيطات -ومن هذه العلوم والتقنية الاستشعار النائي الذي تم تطبيقه في مجالات عديدة شكلت جانباً مهماً من خطط التنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية في بلدان العالم المختلفة.
وقد رأى المترجمان في الدراسة التي قام بها الدكتور مايكل ستيرن والتي تضمنت استخدام الاستشعار النائي في تعداد سكان مديرية كردفان في غرب السودان وأطلق عليها "تعداد من السماء" مثالاً حياً ذا فائدة للعديد من الدارسين والعاملين في تطبيقات الاستشعار النائي -ومن هذا المنطلق جاءت فكرة ترجمة تلك الرسالة إلى اللغة العربية وذلك لإطلاع العاملين في هذا المجال على تطبيقات الاستشعار النائي في عمليات تعداد السكان. ولقد حرص المترجمان حرصاً شديداً على التقيد بالشكل الأصلي للكتاب المترجم. الأمر الذي يجعل من الكتاب المترجم كتاباً فريداً من نوعه.
