وضع هذا الكتاب لطلاب السنة الأولى في كلية الهندسة المدنية القسم العام، وفق الخطة الدراسية الجديدة المعدة من قبل وزارة التعليم العالي في الجمهورية العربية السورية، متماشياً مع التقنيات الحديثة في العلوم المساحية والطبوغرافية.
حيث تم إدراج مجموعة متنوعة من المواضيع والمسائل المساحية التي يحتاجها المهندسون بصورة عامة والمهندس المدني بصورة خاصة، كما ويمكن أن يستفيد منه المهتمون والمنفذون للأعمال المساحية والطبوغرافية في مختلف أعمال الهندسة المدنية.
يقع هذا الكتاب في سبعة فصول، حيث تضمن الفصل الأول مجموعة من التعاريف الأساسية التي لا بد منها وتم التطرق إلى فرضيات شكل الأرض وواحدات القياس المستخدمة في المساحة.
وعرض الفصل الثاني مبادئ نظرية الاخطاء ونظرية التربيعات الصغرى وأنواع القياسات ودقتها، أما الفصل الثالث فقد خصص لدراسة الأجهزة المساحية المستخدمة لقياس المسافات والإتجاهات الأفقية والزوايا الشاقولية وفرق الإرتفاعات وأجهزة قياس المساحات.
تضمن الفصل الرابع قياس المسافات والطرق المتبعة في ذلك، وكذلك إرجاع المسافات المقاسة إلى سطح الجيوئيد، أما في الفصل الخامس فقد تم عرض الأعمال المساحية الإرتفاعية وحساب وتعديل مسارات وشبكات التسوية وتم التطرق إلى مفهوم العدد الوزني وخصوصيته، والتسوية الدقيقة والعالية الدقة.
