إن إشكالية علاقة العقل بالنقل، أو علاقة العقل بالدين هي إشكالية حاكمة في ثقافتنا العربية الإسلامية على مدار تاريخها قديماً وحديثاً، فالثقافة العربية- في عصور الازدهار- هي ثقافة تعطي أولوية للنقل على العقل، وأن دور العقل- في الغالب- ينحصر العمل في الروح النص، ولذلك فإن بعض المذاهب والشخصيات التي أعطت للعقل الأولوية على النقل كالمعتزلة، وابن رشد، لم تلق رواجاً في ثقافتنا العربية، وذلك على رغم من أهتماماتها نبعت من نفس إشكاليات ثقافتنا العربية ولكن سلطة الفقهاء وسلطة السياسة كان لهما دورهما البارز في وأد أي توجه في ثقافتنا ينحو نحو أعضاء السلطة المركزية للعقل، ولهذا فلم يكتب لمثل هذه التيارات النمو والازدهار في ثقافتنا. ومن جانب آخر كانت نفس الإشكالية حاكمة في ثقافتنا العربية الحاكمة، حيث رأى دعاة الإصلاح أن العقل يدور في رحى النص، في حين رأت معظم التيارات الليبرالية والعلمانية في ثقافتنا العربية الحديثة أنه من الضروري أن نتبع التقدم الأوروبي وأن نأخذ بأسبابه في كل مناحي الحياة، في التقدم العلمي، وفي النظم الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية، وقد نادى معظم أعلام هذه التيارات بضرورة القطع مع الدين مثلما قطعت أوروبا الحديثة معه، ونادت هذه التيارات بضرورة تأسيس كل مناحي الحياة وفقاً للرؤية العلمانية للكون.
