لعل أبرز مشروعين قدما قراءة واعية للتراث في فكرنا العربي هي قراءة مشروع (التراث والتجديد) لحسن حنفي. وقراءة مشروع (نقد العقل العربي) لعابد الجابري. وكان على الدراسة أن تجيب عن مجموعة من التساؤلات الملحة. وهي: هل العودة للتراث كان أداة للاحتماء بالتراث والتاريخ؟ وهل ثمة ممارسة لنقد ذاتي في قراءة التراث؟ وهل الانطلاق من التراث هو سبيل النهضة أم أن التراث هو السجن المقيد لحركة الأفكار في ثقافتنا العربية؟ وما مدى مسئولية التراث عن تخلفنا؟ وهل فعلاً أن مجتمعاتنا الشرقية هي مجتمعات يحكمها السلف وهم في قبروهم. وليس للخلف سوى الإذعان؟ وكيف أسهمت المنهجيات الغربية الحديثة في تقديم قراءات جديدة للتراث؟ هل كانت هذه المنهجيات معاملاً سلبياً ايجابياً. معامل هدم أم بناء؟ تساؤلات كثيرة ونطرحها في معالجة قضية التراث في الفكر العربي المعاصر بعامة وفي مشروعي (التراث والتجديد) و(نقد العقل العربي) بصفة خاصة.
