أصبحت ظاهرة الجدران حديث علية القوم، إلا أن النعمان بن المالك لم يقتنع بما سمع، بل لم يأبه بها، فجاء كي يُصغي بنفسه، فأتى متخفّياً.
وبعد أن استمع إلى مناجاة الحجر، أغمض عينه وبكى، وذهب إلى النجلاء منتحباً نادماً على ما كان يخطّط له للغدر بها، وآمن بأن الهدباء قدّيسة.
وعندما سُئل عن الجدران قال "إنها سرّ الأسرار لا للبوح ولا للإستذكار"، ولم يفصح عن شيء ولم يخبر بما استوحاه من تلك الجدران، فشدَّ رحاله إلى ديار بني عمرو وهو في حال غير تلك التي جاء عليها.
أُعجبت النجلاء بمنطق النعمان وقد أدهشتها فروسيته وبسالته من قبل، وإزداد إعجابها به عندما أبطل كل المعاهدات التي أبرمها أبوه مع قائد حاميات الجند البيزنطية.
شدّها قول النعمان وخشوع الأحبار والرهبان، فتساءلت الملكة "من هي الهدباء؟" فحرّك ذلك السؤال الكثير من الظنون في داخلها، وعندما سألت ماريا أجابت بأن الهندباء هي القدّيسة كاترينا، راعية بلاد الشام وسائر أنطاكية، فارتعش جسدها وذهبت في سبات عميق.
