يتحول العديد من الرجال إلى أبطال أسطوريين تحاك من حولهم الأخبار الخارقة، وتروي الحكايات والأعاجيب. من هؤلاء الملك آرثر وما يروي سيفه العجيب وفرسانه ومائدة الفرسان المستديرة. وأما الأساس التاريخي لهذه الحكايات فهو أن أحد الفرسان الإنكليز قاد بعد خروج الرومان من بريطانية فريقاً من رجاله ضد الغزاة من السكسون، فنسجت حول بطولاته الأساطير.
ومع أن هذه البطولات ذات صبغة خيالية فهي تمثل في مجموعها المثل العليا التي يؤمن بها الناس بعامة. ولا شك أن بين المثل التي نراها هنا، وبين مثل الفروسية العربية شبهاً كبيراً. فها هنا الفرسان، أيضاً، ينصرون الضعيف، ويحمون المرأة، ويذودون عن الحياض، ويلتزمون كلمة الشرف ولا يغدرون بالخصم، ويحفظون الصداقة والوفاء، ويتمسكون بالحب النبيل الشريف الذي تهون في سبيله التضحيات.
وجاءت حكايات الفرسان هذه بأسلوب قصصي راضع يجمع بين التشويق وفصاحة التعبير وبساطته، مما يزيد من أثرها في نفوس الصغار والكبار على السواء وهي إلى ذلك توسع من آفاقنا بالتعرف إلى أخلاق الشعوب وعاداتها وطبيعة حياتها.
