سألهم الجبرتي.. مشفقا عليهم, حزينا لنفسه: "ألا تخافون بطش الوالى محمد على باشا بكم إن نقل إليه البصاصون أخبار حصوركم إلى دارى؟.." قال الشيخ حسن العطار: " إننا نستزيد من علمك يا شيخنا, وليس فى ذلك مخالفة للشرع أو للوالى.." قال الجبرتي: "بل أحسبنى بشخصى كلى صرت جريمة عند الوالى.. إنه لا يكف عن مضايقتى.. وإنى أتوجس منه شرا.. لأنه قد يضع لى السم فى الطعام أو الشراب.. بعد أن جعل عسكره يضربون ابنى حتى الموت.." اضطرب رفاعه وقال: سمعت يا شيخنا الجليل.. أن اللصوص قطعوا الطريق على نجلكم وهو عائد من شبرا ليلا.. وسرقوه وضربوه.. حتى الموت.. وأن الباشا أمر الباشا أمر بالبحث عنهم..
سالت دموع الجبرتى.. بللت أوراقه.. وبدا فى شيخوخته أشد حزنا وهزالا.. وضعفا.. أخيرا قال بصوته الواهن: "يا ولدى.. أنا على ثقة من أن الوالى محمد على باشا الألبانى الذى سرق عرش مصر.. هو الذى دبر قتل نجلى خليل بالقربق من قصر الباشا فى حدائق شبرا.. هذا خبر يقين رواه لى شهود العيان.. وحققته بنفسى.. أم تراكم تشكون فيما أسجله فى عجائب الآثار كلية؟!.., قال الشيخ العطار: "أستغفر الله يا شيخنا الكريم.. قصدنا فقط التخفيف عنك.. والحقيقة.. نحن جئنا نرغب فى معرفة الأحوال ومجريات الامور لنستنير بحكمتكم.." قالها الشيخ.. محاولا ترضية الجبرتى, وموساته, والتخفيف من قلقه, وأضاف: ثم إنك يا مؤرخنا العظيم.. علمتنا أن نناقش كل ما نسمعه.. ونعرضه على عقولنا.. لنصل إلى الحقيقة.. قال رفاعه: وفضيلتك علمتنى أن أفحص الأقوال بالأدلة التى يسيغها العقل.. ولهذا طرحت عليكم ما يقال لأصل إلى الحقيقة.. أنا تعلمت هذا منكم يوم محمد على باشا.. "زرتكم مع خالى الشيخ محمد الأنصارى.. أيام تولى الباشا محمد على.." قال الجبرتى: "تقصد يوم استولى.. وليس تولى.. ولا.. ولى.. لقد خدع الجميع.. وسيسطيع بجميع الرقاب.. وأعتقد أن السيد عمر مكرم يعض بنان الندم, حيث هو سجين داره بأمر من الولى.. وغدا ينفيه إلى دمياط.. أو إلى طنطا.. أو يأمر العسس واللصوص من عسكره بقتله وتتويته.. كما فعل مع ابنى.. ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله العلى العظيم"..
