يعنينا من هذا الجانب في سيرة الطهطاوي ما كان من تأثيره على حياته كإنسان وإن كان لا يصور لنا تفرده وخلوده مما يقترن دائماً "بالأثر التاريخي" الذي يتركه صاحب السيرة على صفحة الحياة، ويجذب التاريخ إليه على الدوام.
فكلما امتد هذا الأثر التاريخي على صفحة الحياة كلما امتدت سيرة صاحبه على الزمن، ولا نجد أثرا الإنسان امتد على صفحة الحياة في مصر الحديثة كما امتد أثر الطهطاوي، وسيبقى هذا الأثر خالدا ما بقيت نهضة مصر قائمة تفرع وتأخذ سبيلها نحو الارتقاء والنهوض والتقدم.
ويتصل هذا الأثر التاريخي- ككل أثر تاريخي للبطل أو العظيم في التاريخ- بالفكرة التي استقامت عليها حياته، فكل عمل لابد وأن تقف وراءه فكرة تحفزه، وتدفعه للبروز، وقد تجلت معالم الفكرة في ذهن الطهطاوي منذ البداية فاتجه كبني قرابته إلى الأزهر ليكون شيخاً من شيوخه عله يتصدر حلقاته في يوم من الأيام.
ولكن الفكرة تستقيم على هدى وبصيرة عندما تواتيها الفرصة السانحة، ويجد المعلم ما يستحق أن ينقله إلى قومه، فقبل أن يذهب إلى باريس نراه وشيخه الطويل يرغبان في أن يكتب عن سفرته تلك، عل الناس يرون فيها ما ينفعهم أو يتعلمون منها شيئاً. وتتحول الفكرة إلى عمل حين يرى بعد ما بين الحضارة والتقدم في بلده وهذا البلد البعيد.
فهاهو يتبنى حركة الترجمة بعد عودته وتصبح مدرسة الألسن موئل البعث الجديد، ويتحول أبناؤها إلى كل جديد من فنون الغرب وعلومه ينقلونه إلى طلاب المدارس وإلى الناس عامة، إلا أن المدارس- وقد قامت على النظام الغربي الحديث- هي التي استوعبت جل جهود المترجمين.
وأصبح الرجل الذي هيأ نفسه للترجمة ونقل علوم الغرب إلى لغة قومه معلماً، يعلم الطلاب فنون الترجمة ويمرنهم عليها ويراجع ما يترجمون، ومرشدا يوجه قومه إلى ضروب النهضة والتقدم، ورائدا لحركة فكرية تقوم على الأحياء والتجديد، فكان هذا الأثر التاريخي الذي خلده وخلد به على ما تجرى به سيرته في هذا الكتاب.
