كان جسدي النحيل ينتصب أمام لوحتي كذاكرة مغلّفة بالكبرياء. لم يجرؤ أحدهم على قراءتي. حتى تلك العجوز التي وضعت يدها على فمها وهي تنظر للوحة صارخة في وجهي "يا إلهي. من أين لك هذا؟" لم تسعفها صرختها في استجداء عاطفتي. لم يكن الكبرياء صفة للرسام الذي أمامها لكنه صفة لصاحب الصورة. عادت بعد أن تجاوزت لوحتي. كنت متيقناً من أنها لن تظل ضعيفة أكثر من ذلك. وكأنها جاءت لتقول: «أريد رواية حقيقية لا أحجية تداعب فيها أسماع من يتأمل لوحتك». هنا يمكنني أن أعترف، أنه شتان بين ما كنت أراهن عليه وما حدث. فكبرياء الصورة أحياناً، يسوغ للناظر إليها تمزيق عنفوانها ليفهم ما وراءها. هذا ما حدث. السيدة العجوز كانت تدرك تماماً أنها تنظر لشخص مألوف. لكنها بحاجة إلى ما يؤكد إدراكها. وعندما أدركتْ أني راوغتها بصمت لا مبرر له، صرخت لتقتل ذلك البعد في مخيلتي.
