عندما يدور الحلم حول "هناك", فإن "هنا" تفقد واقعيتها, ويقع من يهاجر إلى وطن جديد تاركا خلفه وطنه القديم فى هذه الحيرة. تتبنى رواية "حديقة الياسمين" شوق المهاجرين لحياة جديدة, وتمسكهم العنيد بالحلم القديم, كما تستشف بحثهم الذى لايكل عن الهوية ومايحوطهم من مخاطر. تصور الرواية تجربة الحب لدى زوجيين كنديين, وتعايش الأديان معا. ومحاولات إرهابية فى مواجهة التواجد الأمريكى فى مصر, فى محاولة لبعث الحياة من جديد فى علاقتهما الزوجية التى بدأ الفتور يتخللها, غير أنهما يجدان نفسيهما مشتبكين فى المشكلات السياسية لبلدهما الأصلى.
وتمثل رواية "حديقة الياسمين" فضاء رحبا تقع فيه الأحداث من خلال تقابل أصوات متباينة فى رؤيتها للواقع. وتقع الأحداث فى مصر فى السنوات الأخيرة من القرن العشرين.
