تستشف الرواية روح كندا وروح شخصياتها ورؤاهم المختلفة، فتعكس أطيافا من الأراء والمشاعر المتجسدة إزاء أزمة الهوية أو طبقات من الهويات المتداخلة. روح كندا تكتسح البحيرات والمساحات الشاسعة والغابات والحقول والأنهار، وتنعكس في صيحة طائر الغواص. الناس فيها عالم مصغر من العالم الكبير، فهم مجموعة من المهاجرين ينتمون إلي جنسيات سابقة خاصة من مصر، ثقافات مختلفة فتتصالح أو تتصادم. امراة لا نعرف إسمها مهاجرة من مصر الي كندا تنصت لصيحة طائر الغواص فوق بحيرة هيورن، وهو من رموز كندا، وتمارس فن التصوير الفوتوغرافي لتقبض علي روح المكان ورؤها الصوفية. زوجها رشيد طبيب في المؤسسة الصحية الكندية في هاميلتون، يمثل القطب المضاد لشخصيتها حيث العقلانية العلمية المحضة. يكتشفان الثقافة الفرنسية في كويبك وثقافة شعب الميجماخ في محمية السكان الأصليين في ريستيجوش، ويزوران مصر التي لا تغيب عن كل أجواء الرواية وأفكار معظم شخصياتها ومشاعرهم.
