يمثل هذا الكتاب تجربة مبكرة في إنتاج الكاتب المسرحي يسري الجندي حيث أنهى كتابته عام 1968 وحصل به على جائزة النقد مناصفة في مؤتمر الأدباء عام 1969، ثم نشرت بعض فصوله في مجلات: المسرح والآداب البيروتية والطليعة القاهرية.
ولكن نشر الكتاب كاملاً الآم ربما يكتسب أهمية خاصة لما طرحه نظرياً عن فكرته في (الجدل المفتوح) وهي فكرة تجد الآن ما يبررها مبدئياً بعد ما اهتزت في الفترة الأخيرة فلسفات بدت للكثيرين أنها مستقرة ومكتملة، وفي ظل تحد عام يواجه الفكر الإنساني بتغيرات عاصفة أحاطت بالمجتمع البشري في تلك المرحلة من تاريخه، ثم يأتي بعد ذلك ما طرح عن تصور جديد حول تراجيديا معاصرة على ضوء فكرة الجدل المفتوح، وعلى ضوء رؤيا شاملة لتاريخ المسرح ككل. ثم تأتي إضافة هامة في نهاية الكتاب تربط بين إبداع نجيب محفوظ الروائي وملامح هذه التراجيديا المعاصرة والتي لم يجد ما يناظرها بنفس الوضوح في الإبداع المسرحي العربي نفسه.
وهو طرح في مجمله يفتح أفقاً جديداً للحوار في ظل الواقع الحالي للمسرح المصري.
