"الحروب والحضارات" كتاب يمثل إحدى المحاولات الجادة من نوعها في العالم، التي تسهم في تسليط الضوء على "علم الحرب" وغايته إحصاء النزاعات المتنوعة المحلية والإقليمية والدولية التي عرفتها البشرية منذ أقدم العصور حتى الآن، واستقراؤها وتحليلها بشكل علمي وموضوعي لمعرفة جذورها وأهدافها الحقيقية ونتائجها الفعلية وأثارها على تاريخ الإنسانية ومصير الحضارات. واستناداً إلى المبادئ والأسس والدروس المستخلصة، الانتقال إلى مرحلة متقدمة وهي حصر النزاعات الراهنة وبذور النزاعات المحتملة، وتحليلها وتحديد نسبة خطر كل منها ثم تصنيفها حسب درجة خطورتها، بهدف احتوائها والتعرف على الشروط الممكنة لوضع الحلول السلمية المناسبة لتجنبها، قبل انفجارها إن أمكن.
وهكذا يبدو أن كتاب "علم الحرب" لا يهدف إلى مناقشة العلوم الفنية العسكرية والاستراتيجية في جميع مستوياتها، بل هو نقيضها تماماً لأنه يهدف إلى تقصي جذور النزاعات من أجل حلها سلمياً وتقليص احتمالات الحرب إلى أقصى درجة ممكنة، وإن أمكن إلغائها تدريجياً. ولعل من أهم ما يلفت النظر في هذا الكتاب والذي يعاد طبعه للمرة الثالثة، هو مدى موضوعية ودقة تحاليله، وغزارة معلوماته وصحة التوقعات التي تنبأ بها خلال العقدين الأخيرين من هذا القرن. فقد أكد على أن أخطر ما تواجهه البشرية في الفترة الباقية من القرن العشرين هو: التحدي النووي، والتعجز السكاني، ويقظة النزاعات الدينية والقومية والعرقية، كما أشار إلى الأماكن الأكثر تعرضاً لأخطار الحرب الواقعة وسط القارة الأسيوية والشرق الأوسط، وشواطئ المحيط الهندي.
