كِتابُ الأَمثالِ للأصمعي - عبدُ الملكِ بن قُرَيْب - هو أحدُ الكتبِ التراثيةِ الثّمينةِ التي افتقدَتها المكتبةُ العربيَّةُ حقّاً.
وهذا الكتاب ذكره المصنُفون القدماء، وأفادوا منه، ثم ضاعَ بعد ذلك، ولم نعثر له على أثر سوى ما كان مُتّفرُقاً منه هنا وهناك في بطونِ الكُتبِ والمصنَّفاتِ.
كتابُ الأمثالِ لشيخ رواة البصرة وبغداد يقدّمُه مُحقِّقُهُ بِحُلَّة علميَّة قشيبةٍ بعد أن عزَّ ذِكرُهُ وضاعَ خُبرُهُ بين الدارسين، فتعقُبَهُ المحقَّقُ خُبراً في المظانُ، وجَمَعَهُ أشتاتاً استخلصها من بين دفِّاتِ كُتبِ مَصادرِ التُّراثِ العربيِّ القديمِ ليجعلَها كِتاباً مُوحِّداً قائِماً على أصولِ البحثِ ومَنهجِ التُّحقيقِ العلميّ.
ولا تُخفى أهميَّةُ الأمثالِ مَصدراً من مصادرِ لُغةِ العربِ، استعانَ بها اللُّغويُّونَ في مُعجماتهم والنَّحويُّون في مُصنَّفاتِهم، وما أَحوجَ الباحثين في الدَّرسِ النَّحْويّ واللَّغويّ عامةُ إلى الأمثالِ، وهي مدارُ الإستشهادِ النَّحويّ واللّغويّ لا سيما ما وقَعَ منها ضِمنّ عصرِ الإحتجاجِ بالفَصيحِ من اللَّغةِ الذي يَنتهي بِسقوطِ الدّولةِ الأُمويِة عام (132هـ) على الرّأيِ الرَّاجحِ عندَ العُلّماءِ.
