كتاب الأمثال لأبي عُبيدَة مَعمرَ بن المثَنَّى - شيخٌ من شُيوخ مدرسة البصرة، وَأحَدَ أعلامها، أخذ الكٌتبِ التٌّراثيّةِ الثَّمينةِ التي افتقدتها المكتبةٌ العربيَّةٌ حقّاً.
وهذا الكتابُ ذكره المُصنَّفون القدماء، وأفادوا منهُ، ثمَّ ضاع بعدَ ذلك، ولم تعثَّرْ له على أثر سوى ما كانَ مُتفرَّقاً منهُ هنا وهناك في بطون الكتب والمصنَّفات العربيّة القديمة.
كتابُ الأمثال يقدِّمُهُ مُحقّقُه بحلِّةٍ علميّةٍ قشيبةٍ بعدَ أنَ عزّ ذِكْرُهُ بينَ الباحثينَ، وافتقدت إليه المكتبة العربيّة.
فتعقُبَهُ مُحقّقَهُ خبراً في المَظَانّ، وجَمَعَهُ أشتاتاً استخلصها مِن بَين دفّاتٍ المصادِرِ القديمة ليجعلها كِتاباً مُوحْداً قائماً على أصول البحثِ ومنهجِ التَّحقيق العلميِّ.
ولا تُخفى أهميَّة الأمثال مَصدراً من مصادرِ لُغةِ العرب، استعان بها اللٌّغويُّونَ في معجماتهم والنحويِّون في مصنِّفاتهم، وما أحوج الباحثين في الدِّرس النَّحويِّ واللَّغويّ عامةً إلى الأمثالِ، وهي مدارُ الإٍستشهاد النَّحويِّ واللَّغويِّ لا سيما ما وقع منها ضمن عصر الإحتجاج بالفصيح من اللَّغة الذي ينتهي بسقوط الدّولة الأموية عام (132هـ) على الرّأيِ الرَّاجحِ عندَ العُلَماءِ.
