إنّ هدف هذا الكتاب هو تقريب علم الاجتماع من الطالب والباحث العربي، وتبديد مخاوفه الناتجة عمّا يصادفه من صعوباتٍ في دراسته وممارسته لهذا التخصص المعرفي.
يطمح هذا الكتاب إلى أن ييسر للطلاب فهم علم الاجتماع، موضوعاً ومنهجاً، وأن يعرّفه بالأدبيات السوسيولوجية، الكلاسيكية والمعاصرة، كما يسعى إلى أن يكون مرجعاً في متناول يد الأساتذة من أجل تنشيط دروسهم، وتشجيع طلابهم على التفكير النقدي، ومساعدتهم على تطوير خيالهم السوسيولوجي.
كما أنه يحاول أن يمنح لهؤلاء الطلاب والباحثين المبتدئين في علم الاجتماع الفرصة لإستعمال الخيال السوسيولوجي من أجل فهم الأبعاد الجديدة لعالمهم الاجتماعي، مع التركيز على القضايا المعاصرة والمقاربات السوسيولوجية الكفيلة بمعالجتها في ضوء القواعد العلمية للبحث الاجتماعي.
إنّها أهداف كبيرة، لكن يمكن بلوغها بالتأكيد، ويمكن لهذا الكتاب أن يساعد على تحقيقها، إنّ القولة المأثورة لعالم الاجتماع بيتر بيرغر: "إن الحكمة الأولى لعلم الاجتماع هي أنّ الأشياء ليست كما تبدو لنا"، تنتصب بمنزلة تَحَدِّ لطرق تعليمنا وتشكّل إلهاماً للمؤلف لتحرير هذا الكتاب.
