قام المؤلف فى هذا الكتاب بدراسة الروافد الثقافية التى أثرت فى حياة المتنبي تأثيرا مباشرا مقسما حياته إلى أطوار فنية رأى فيها معالم بارزة وسمات واضحة ألفت بظلها على فنه وأعاد ترتيب ديوان المتنبى حسب الأحوال التي رآها وهى ثلاثه عارضا لحياة فن التشبية في التراث.
كما سألت نفسي في بحث "الإيقاع الصوتي في شعر شوقي" لماذا شوقي والشعراء كثيرون؟! أطرح السؤال نفسه هنا مع المتنبي.
وأحسب أن الإجابة عنه أسهل فالمتنبي هو المتنبي وكفى "شاعر العربية والعروبة، فارس الكلم، قائد الحكمة ، صاحب اللواء ،الذي جسد ذاته فنانا عربيا ثائرا، جمع بين عمق الفكرة وصفاء العبارة. وقد قسمت حياته إلى أطوار فنية ثلاثة ، رأيت فيها معالم بارزة وسمات واضحة ألقت بظلها على فنه ومن الافضل أن تدرس حياته الفنية من خلالها..
ومن ثم كان لزاما ان أعيد ترتيب ديوان المتنبي حسب هذه الأطوار الثلاثة ولو اختلف المر مع ترتيب المتنبي نفيه لديوانه..
ومن الطبيعي وأنا أدرس "الصورة التشبيهية" ان أعرض لحياة فن التشبيه في التراث ، ولم يفتني أن اتوقف في دراستي للصورة التشبيهية المتنبية عند "مفردات الصورة التشبيهية" وتركيزي على "المثير" لأن الذي ولد الاستجابة والذي أدى إلى ذكر وجه الشبة أو حذفه وذكر أداءة التشبية او حذفها. وبعد رحلة التنظير انتقلت إلى التطبيق هذا هو دور البلاغي الحديث في نظري تاصيل وتجديد. أن يتلمس البلاغة في نسيج النص أن يبحث عن وظيفتها في داخل العمل نفسه أن يرصدها وهى تتحرك ويصفها وهى تسرى في كيان اللوحة الفنية وان يتذوقها وهى تنشر عبيرها ثم يسجل الإضافات التى يضفيها الفنانون إلى البلاغة.
هذا ما حاولت القيام به بغض النظر عن النتائج التى وصلت اليها فسأعود إليها - ان شاء الله مرة ومرة ومرات ويبقى المنهج وتبقى الرؤية: بلاغة بلا جمهود ، فن بلا قيود ، وفكر وذوق. تأصيل بلا استخفاف بالاقدمين وتجديد بلا انبهار بالمحدثين وامل في ان تستمر شعلة البلاغة متوقدة.
