بدأ ظهور القصة القصيرة كجنس فني إبداعي في الصين في عهد سلالة تانغ (618- 907) الذي ازدهر فيه أيضاً فن الشعر وفن النحت.
تعكس هذه المجموعة الحياة الإجتماعية والثقافية في الصين، بكل ما فيها من تقاليد وأعراف وأساطير ومعتقدات كانت شائعة في عهود السلالات الصينية الحاكمة في العصور المتعاقبة منذ العام 960 حتى الثورة الصينية في العام 1911، حيث تعاقبت على حكم الصين السلالات التالية: تانغ، وصنغ، تشينغ.
تضم هذه المجموعة عشرين قصة قصيرة شملت موضوعات متنوعة، مثل المغامرات والحب والألغاز والأشباح والشباب والهجاء والفكاهة والخيال.
