إزداد الوعي العالمي لأهمية القضايا السكانية وتجلّت تلك الأهمية أثناء إعداد الحكومات مخططات التنمية الإجتماعية والإقتصادية ووضعها موضع التنفيذ، ولا بد للمخططات والبرامج على السواء من أن تأخذ بالإعتبار العوامل المرتبطة بالسكان، أي النمو الديمغرافي السريع أو البطيء والهجرة وتوزع السكان والتمدن، ولئن اهتمّ كل بلد بالقضايا السكانية التي تعنيه، فالإهتمامات المشتركة كانت كافية لحمل المعنيين على مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة للسكان في بوخارست عام 1974 للإهتمام بالنمو السكاني المتسارع في العالم، وكشف هذا المؤتمر، الذي تمحور حول الإهمية السياسية للظواهر السكانية عن التنوع الكبير للمناهج والسياسات التي تعززها ضمن السياق العالمي، ثقافات وأوضاع قومية مختلفة.
وقد أقر عدد متزايد من دول العالم ضرورة إدخال المسائل السكانية في البرامج التربوية، كما وتطوّر مفهوم التربية السكانية، وفيما يتعلق بالوطن العربي، فقد أوصى المشاركون في إجتماع كبار المسؤولين عن التربية والتعليم في الدول العربية الذي عقد في عمان - الأردن من 22- 26 حزيران 1987 بإدخال التربية السكانية والأسرية في المناهج المدرسية وتعليم الكبار إلى وسائل إعداد المعلمين ومناهج محو الأمية وتعليم الكبار إلى وسائل الإعلام لنشر المعلومات السكانية بغية تركيز الوعي بأسباب الظواهر السكانية ونتائجها على صعيد الفرد والأسرة والمجتمع.
وقد جاء هذا الكتاب الذي يتناول موضوع السكان والتربية والتنمية في الوطن العربي في ست فصول، عالج الأول منها: لمحة جغرافية عن الوطن العربي، وتناول الفصل الثاني الوضع السكاني ودينامية السكان في الوطن العربي، والفصل الثالث السكان والتنمية في الوطن العربي، الرابع تناول السكان والحياة الأسرية في الوطن العربي، أما الفصل الخامس فقد تناول ملامح السياسة السكانية في الدول العربية، والفصل السادس والأخير التربية السكانية في الأردن.
