سليم نجيب حيدر (1911 - 1980) وُلد في بعلبك ودرس فيها. انتقل بعد ذلك ليدرس في الجامعة الوطنية بعاليه، ثم في معهد "اللاييك" ببيروت. حاز إجازة في الآداب وشهادة الدبلوم في العلم الجنائي والعلوم السياسية وعلم الاجتماع وعلم النفس؛ وحاز أيضًا دكتوراه في الحقوق من جامعات باريس ومونبولييه. عُيّن قاضيًا وسفيرًا فوق العادة في إيران وأفغانستان والمغرب والاتحاد السوفياتي، ثم وزيرًا في 3 حكومات متتالية من العام 1952 حتى 1955. وانتُخب نائباً عن البقاع في دورتي 1953 و1968. مُنح أهم الأوسمة الرسمية والفكرية، منحته إياها دول ومنظمات عربية ودوليّةً. أتقن حيدر 7 لغات. كتب الشعر والنثر والسياسة، وشارك في مؤتمرات، وألقى محاضراتٍ كثيرة في مواضيع متشعّبة، تشمل السياسة والأدب والتربية والدين والفلسفة.
