يعرض الكتاب نتائج استقصاء أثنوغرافي مركز في بلدة مسيحية وحاضرة شيعية صغيرة في جنوب لبنان. يرمي البحث إلى تسليط الضوء على ظاهرة الطائفية بصفتها طريقة في الممارسة الإجتماعية - السياسية وأسلوبا في التفكير معا. يندرج هذا البحث في توجه السوسيولوجيت الفاهمة في صيغتها الفينومينولوجية.
بغية استطلاع هذا النمط المركب للخبرة الذهنية والممارسة الإجتماعية - السياسية، تطرق المؤلف إلى دراسة مقارنة للشعائر الإحتفالية التي أقيمت يوم الجمعة العظيمة وأثناء عشارية عاشوراء. تتصف هاتان المناسبتان بأهمية كبرى، إذ يجري الإحتفال بذكرى الحدث التأسيسي لكلتا الجماعتين المذهبتين، ويعيش في أثنائهما المحتفلون خبرة تطهيرية ذات مغزى.
لقد أخضعت المعلومات الميدانية لتحليل سيميائي مكثف سعيا لفهم الخبرة المعرفية - الروحية المعاشة، واستنباط محتوياتها الرئيسة. فمن خلال العملية التحليلية برزت معالم الخطاب الطائفي وظهرت بناه وديناميته: إنه خطاب لاهوتي في ظاهره يعبر عن مضامين سياسية ضمنية. ويشير هذا الخطاب إلى تشكيلة مجتمعية تدمج في بنيانها الجماعة المذهبية والمجتمع المدني في وحدة الزمرة المرجعية.
