وُلد المؤلف في بودابست بهنغاريا العام 1936، إنتسب إلى الرهبانيّة اليسوعيّة في النمسا العام 1964، ثمّ انتقل إلى لبنان سنة 1968 وعاش منذ ذلك الحين في منطقة الشرق الأدنى.
قضى سنوات عديدة في الريف، وهو يعلّم حاليّاً في كليّة الآداب والعلوم الإنسانيّة بجامعة القدّيس يوسف، ساعدته الدراسات البيزنطيّة الصقلبيَّة التي تعمّق فيها على معرفة تاريخ الدين المسيحيّ في الشرق وتقاليده، كما قادته رسالته إلى إكتشاف حياة مسيحيّي المشرق العربيّ وتفكيرهم.
يعرض الكتاب نتائجَ إستقصاءٍ أثنوغرافيّ أُجريَ في بلدة مسيحيّة ريفيّة في جبل لبنان الجنوبي، يرمي البحث إلى تسليط الضوء على ظاهرة الطائفيّة بصفتها طريقة في الممارسة الإجتماعيّة - السياسيّة وأسلوباً في التفكير معاً، يندرج هذا البحث في توجّه السوسيولوجيا الفاهمة في صيغتها الفينومينولوجِيَّة.
بغية إستطلاع هذه الظاهرة المركّبة، أُخضعت مدوّنة الكلام، التي جرى جمعها أثناء الإستقصاء الميدانيّ لتحليلٍ لغويّ دقيق، وذلك سعياً إلى إستكشاف البُنى الذهنية التي تنتج الخطاب الطائفيّ.
من خلال العمليّة التحليليّة برزت معالم هذا الخطاب وظهرت بناه وديناميّته، حيث تبيّن أنّه خطاب لاهوتيّ في ظاهره يعبّر عن مضامين سياسيّة ضمنيّة، يدلّ هذا الخطاب إلى تشكيلة مجتمعة تدمج في بنياتها الجماعة المذهبيّة والمجتمع المدنيّ في وحدة الزمرة المرجعيّة.
