يطلق كثير من الناس اسم العلويون على طائفة النصيرية وكان الفرنسيون أثناء استعمارهم لسوريا, هم أول من أطلق عليهم هذا الاسم, وهدفهم من ذلك التلبيس على الناس وخداعهم, لأن الإبقاء على اسم النصيرية يجعل الناس يتساءلون عن ماهية هذه الطائفة وحقيقتها, أما اسم العلويين فيوحي بأنهم من شيعة علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه.
يقول أبو الهيثم في كتابه الإسلام في مواجهة الباطنية ص26: حاول الفرنسيون تعميق وجودهم في سوريا بكل الوسائل التي تصوروها محققة لهذا الغرض, فقسموها إلى دول وحكومات, وأثبتوا ذلك بإثارة الفتن بين الجماعات؛ ليفرغوا على ذلك التقسيم صفاته الدائمة. وقد نجحت خطتهم بادئ ذي بدء في استهواء الأكثرين. فكان لذلك أثره في مقاومة العمل الوطني, الذي حدد أهدافه بالاستقلال وإعادة الوحدة السياسية لسورية.
