لم يكن من بين أهدافي أن أكتب مؤلفًا يدخل في تصنيف الكتب التي ضد أنور السادات, أو ضد محمد حسنين هيكل, أو تلك التي تقف في صف واحد منهما ضد الآخر.. هدفي كان هو درس العلاقة بين الكاتب والسلطان, خاصة حين يكون الكاتب في حجم, وقيمة, وتجربة, ودور واحد مثل هيكل, ويكون السلطان في صورة وسياسة ودرامية حاكم مثل السادات.
إن تركيز الدراسة على العلاقة بين الكاتب والسلطان وتقديم السادات وهيكل كنموذج لهذه العلاقة, لا يعطي الصورة الكاملة لأي منهما.. هذا ليس كل أنور السادات, هو بعضه, هو أهم فترات حياته, والأكثر أهمية بالنسبة إلى مسار الأحداث بعد ذلك في مصر والوطن العربي.
وهذ ليس كل محمد حسنين هيكل, هو بعضه, فهو كان موجودًا قبل رئاسة السادات, ثم إنه ظل موجودًا بعده, ومؤكد أنه صاحب دور أكبر وأفضل.. ولكنا رأينا أهمية خاصة لدراسة العلاقة بينهما, ففعلنا راجين أن يكون عملنا إسهامًا في فهم فترة من أهم وأخطر فترات تاريخنا المعاصر.
