هذه الرواية هي أولى روايات شارلوت برونتي، وقد كتبت في الأصل قبل رواية جين إير، وقدّمت للنشر مع مرتفعات وذرنغ وآغنِس غراي، ثم بعد ذلك قدّمت وحدها، ورفضت من قبل العديد من دور النشر، لكنّها نشرت في عام 1857 عقب وفاة شارلوت، بمساعدة آرثر بيل نيكولز، الذي قبل بأن يقوم بتحريرها وتقويمها.
تدور الرواية حول حياة شابّ منذ فترة بلوغه وإلى أن أصبح أستاذاً في مدرسة للبنات، وهي رواية سهلة الأسلوب واضحة لا تعقيد فيها، وتحاكي في أحداثها وتقلباتها حياة كثير من الناس حتّى يومنا هذا، مع العلم بأنّها كتبت في زمن مختلف؛ وبالإضافة إلى إنسيابيّتها وسلاستها، فإن القارئ يستطيع أن يلمس قراءتها العميقة للنفس الإنسانيّة في أطوارها المختلفة.
والعجيب في الأمر أن حياة شارلوت برونتي امتلأت بالقهر والكبت والحرمان، وكان يفترض أن يفضي ذلك إلى صعوبة في المزاج وتعقيد في الكتابة يوازي التواءات النفس وتعقيداتها، لكنّ الرواية، على العكس من ذلك، كتبت بلغة واضحة جليّة يسيرة على الفهم رغم إنشغالها بالتحليل.
لقد رمت الكاتبة، من خلال عملها هذا، إلى أن تبشّر بمستقبل مشرقٍ تزول فيه القيود عن الوعي، ويتغيّر فيه منطق التعامل مع البنات إلى ما هو أرقى وأرحم.
