إرنست كاسيرر (1874 - 1945) فيلسوف ألماني ومؤرخ فلسفة ينتمي إلى ما يسمى بمدرسة ماربورج في “الفلسفة الكانطية الجديدة”. اشتهر كأبرز شارح للفلسفة النقدية الكانطية في القرن العشرين. غادر ألمانيا في عام 1933، وتوفي في نيويورك. من أشهر أعماله: “الجوهر والوظيفة” (1910)، “الحرية والشكل” (1916)، “فلسفة الأشكال الرمزية” (1923 - 1929)، “الأسطورة والدولة” (1942)، “الرمز والأسطورة والثقافة (1979)، “اللغة والأسطورة” (1925).

في هذا الكتاب، يرى واحد من أبرز الباحثين النقديين المرجعيّين في القرن العشرين أن ثمة قاسماً مشتركاً يجمع بين شتى الروافد الفكرية التي تصب في ذلك التيار التاريخي الحاسم وهو "عصور التنوير".
ويحلل المؤلف بعض الملامح البارزة في أفكار أفلاطون وأرسطو وديكارت وسبينوزا ولايبنتز وفرانسيس بيكون وجون لوك وبيركلي وهوبز وهيوم وفولتير وروسو وديدرو وهيردر وغوته وشيلر ولسينغ؛ ويخلص إلى أن كلا من هؤلاء الفلاسفة التنويريين استمد بعض أفكاره ممن سبقوه أو عاصروه، لكنه أعاد صوغها وتجديدها - بصورة جوهرية أحياناً - لتناسب سياقها التاريخي والإجتماعي، وتضافرت جهود هؤلاء التنويريين لتخرج الفلسفة من دائرة الفكر المجرد وتعيدها إلى وضعها الحقيقي بوصفها قوة ناشطة خلاقة يمكن من خلالها معرفة العالم والتعرف إليه.
