في الصفحات التالية نحاول إلقاء الضوء على بعض المفاهيم الهامة التي لها آثارها البعيدة في فكرنا المعاصر، فلا يخفى على أحد ما للفهم الصحيح للدين من تأثير إيجابي عميق على تفكير المتدينين وسلوكهم، وإذا كان الأمر كذلك بالنسبة للدين فإن الأمر لا يقل أهمية وخطورة بالنسبة للفسلفة التي تعتمد العقل الإنساني أساساً راسخاً للدور الذي تضطلع به في حياة الأفراد والجماعات على السواء.
فإذا أتيحت الفرصة للعقل الإنساني ليقوم بالدور المنوط به كان في ذلك حماية للفكر من الوقوع في مهاوى الضلال العقلي، وهذا كله يدعونا إلى أن نبحث عن الطريق السوى للخروج من متاهات الفهم الخاطئ للدين من ناحية، ومن متاهات الضلال العقلي من ناحية أخرى، وذلك يتم عن طريق تحديد المفاهيم وتوضيح الأفكار وبيان وجه الحق فيها حتى تتضح الحقيقة أمام الناس.
ونظراً لأنه يكاد يكون هناك إجماع في الشرق وفي الغرب على أن الفيلسوف المسلم ابن رشد يعد واحداً من عظماء التنوير في العالم، فقد كان لزاماً علينا أن نوضح مفهوم التنوير في فكره، وإذا كان ابن رشد- بعد مرور ثمانية قرون على وفاته- لا يزال يحظى بهذه المكانة حتى يومنا هذا فإن ذلك لا يعنى أن الساحة الفكرية قد خلت من بعده من قادة التنوير والإصلاح على المستويين الدينى والفكرى.
ومن هنا لم يكن يجوز لنا في هذا الصدد أن نتجاهل رائد الإصلاح والتنوير في العصر الحديث وهو الشيخ محمد عبده الذي كان لفكره الدينى والفلسفى تأثير واضح في مصر بصفة خاصة وفي العالم الغسلامي بصفة عامة، وقد ركزنا هنا على وجه الخصوص على إبراز مكانة العقل في فكره.
