كرم الإسلام المرأة، ورفع من شأنها، فوضع الأسس والقوانين التي ترعاها وتكفل لها حقوقها كاملة كزوجة، وكأم، وكإبنة، وكأخت، وتصونها من الهوان والإبتذال، فالمنقب في شؤون المرأة في كتب الفقه يتأكد له ذلك.
"القرآن الكريم" تزخر آياته بالحديث عن نساء سجلن على صفحات الإنسانية مواقف ناصعة، في سبيل إعلاء كلمة الله تعالى والدفاع عن الشرائع السماوية، كذلك تزخر كتب التاريخ والسيرة بسير نساء كن مثالاً في النبل، والكرامة، والشجاعة والوفاء، والعفة، والطهارة، والجهاد في سبيل الله تعالى.
ومنهن النساء الذين قاتلن إلى جانب الرجال في واقعة الطف الأليمة واستشهدن، ونساء حاولن المشاركة في القتال فووجهن برفض الإمام الحسين رضي الله عنه، ونساء لعبن دور المحرض لرجالهن وأبنائهن على خوض المعركة دفاعاً عن الحسين وأهل بيته، ونساء قمن بدور الرعاية والإشراف وحفظ النسوة والأطفال خلال المعركة وما بعد المعركة كالعقيلة زينب رضي الله عنه، التي يبرز دورها أكثر نصاعة بعد الواقعة.
هذا الجانب الهام في واقعة كربلاء أضاء عليه مؤلف دائرة المعارف الحسينية الشيخ الدكتور "محمد صادق محمد الكرباسي"، فإلى جانب معجم الأنصار الرجال من الهاشميين وغير الهاشميين وضع سماحته معجم الأنصار النساء من الهاشميات وغير الهاشميات الذي يتناول بالتفصيل مجموع النسوة اللاتي شاركن في واقعة الطف.
فقد أفاض سماحته في الحديث عن حياتهن وأنسابهن وأزواجهن وأبنائهن، وأدوارهن في كربلاء، وما قبلها وما بعدها ببحث علمي وتاريخي دقيق لم يسبق أن تناوله أحد بهذا الشكل، مع إيراد مقدمة وافية تناول فيها مختلف جوانب المرأة وما سنه الله تعالى من سنن لإكرامهان وما يقوم به الآخرون للحط من قدرها وإهانتها.
