وائل حلاق (ولد 1955 م) هو باحث فلسطيني الأصل، كندي الجنسية، مسيحيّ الديانة، متخصص بالقانون وتاريخ الفكر الإسلامي، يعمل كأستاذ علوم اجتماعية في جامعة كولومبيا - قسم دراسات الشرق الأوسط. التحق حلاق بعد حصوله على شهادة الدكتوراة من جامعة واشنطن بمعهد الدراسات الإسلامية بجامعة مكغيل وعمل كأستاذ مساعد بالقانون الإسلامي عام 1985 م. نال درجة الأستاذية عام 1994م. يعتبر حلاق مؤلف ومحاضر واسع الإطلاع إذ لديه الكثير من الاسهامات بمجال الدراسات الإسلامية. ترجمت أعماله إلى عدة لغات منها العبرية والإندونيسية والإيطالية واليابانية والتركية. في عام 2009 م قد تم تصنيف حلاق ضمن أكثر 500 شخصية مسلمة تأثيراً على مستوى العالم.

يُعدُّ طه عبد الرحمن من أبرز الفلاسفة الذين أفرزهم عالم الإسلام حيث تغطّي مؤلّفاته مجالاتٍ واسعة تتناول موضوعات ترتبط باللّغويات والمنطق والوجود والعقل والتواضع والعنف والمادية والعقيدة والجدل والحوار، بل وفلسفة اللّباس.
بيد أنه على الرغم من إتساع إهتماماته، فإن الخيط الذي يربط كلَّ أطراف فلسفته هو الخيط الأخلاقي، ويظلُّ مشروع عبد الرحمن - في كلّ أبعاده ووجهاته المتنوِّعة - منتمياً إلى ما نطق عليه بصفةٍ عامَّة: "فلسفة الأخلاق".
يركِّز هذا الكتاب - بصفةٍ خاصَّة - على هذه القضية (الأخلاق)؛ إذ يخيطها عبد الرحمن في نسيج إشتباكه الخطابي مع المشكلات المركزية التي ترزح تحتها الحداثةُ في "الغرب" و"البلاد الإسلامية" على السواء، وبالنظر إلى الغرب وبلاد الإسلام لا بإعتبارها دالاَّت جغرافية، وإنما تشكُّلات معرفية من الدرجة الأولى.
وبناءً عليه، لا يدّعي الدكتور وائل حلاق أن هذا الكتاب يحوط بكل أبعاد مشروع عبد الرحمن الضخم أو حتى بأغلبها، إلا أنه يأملُ أن ما يناقشه فيه يكشف عن "الأعصاب المركزية" التي يعمل نظام فكره من خلالها.
بعبارة أخرى، يتناول هذا الكتاب الخلايا الحيوية التي تجعل مشروع عبد الرحمن ما هو عليه، والتي إن غيَّرنا تكوينها الداخلي يصير ذلك المشروع مختلفاً إختلافاً جوهريّاً عمَّا نعرفه عنه الآن.
يعني هذا أيضاً أنه مع تواصل مشروع عبد الرحمن، فإن لدينا بالفعل نسيجاً فكريّاً ضخماً يمكن التعرّف إليه بوصفه إسهاماً متميّزاً في الأخلاق جديراً بأن يجذب إنتباهنا وبأن يكون مادةً لبحثنا.
