وائل حلاق (ولد 1955 م) هو باحث فلسطيني الأصل، كندي الجنسية، مسيحيّ الديانة، متخصص بالقانون وتاريخ الفكر الإسلامي، يعمل كأستاذ علوم اجتماعية في جامعة كولومبيا - قسم دراسات الشرق الأوسط. التحق حلاق بعد حصوله على شهادة الدكتوراة من جامعة واشنطن بمعهد الدراسات الإسلامية بجامعة مكغيل وعمل كأستاذ مساعد بالقانون الإسلامي عام 1985 م. نال درجة الأستاذية عام 1994م. يعتبر حلاق مؤلف ومحاضر واسع الإطلاع إذ لديه الكثير من الاسهامات بمجال الدراسات الإسلامية. ترجمت أعماله إلى عدة لغات منها العبرية والإندونيسية والإيطالية واليابانية والتركية. في عام 2009 م قد تم تصنيف حلاق ضمن أكثر 500 شخصية مسلمة تأثيراً على مستوى العالم.

يشكّل هذا الكتاب موجزاً منتقى عن الشريعة الإسلامية ( النظرية ، والممارسة والتحولات ) وهو موجّه لغير المختصين ، يقدم معلومات لمن يبحثون عن مقدمة موجزة عن الإسلام وشريعته ، ويمثل استقصاءاً شاملاً للشريعة الإسلامية وعلاقتها بالمجتمعات الإسلامية منذ ظهور الإسلام إلى عصرنا الحاضر .
يركّز الكتاب على مذاهب الشريعة الإسلامية وممارساتها في سياق تاريخي ، يبرز خلاله كيفية أدائها وظيفتها ضمن نطاق مجتمعات مرحلة ما قبل العصر الحديث بوصفها مطلباً أخلاقياً قبل كل شيء .
وفي هذا السياق يأخذ المؤلف قارئه في رحلةٍ يتتبع خلالها تاريخ الشريعة الإسلامية ابتداءً ببداياتها في الجزيرة العربية في القرن السابع ، ومروراً بتطورها وتحولها في القرون اللاحقة في ظل حكم الدولة العثمانية ، وعبر مناطق عديدة متنوعة كالهند وإفريقيا وجنوب شرق آسيا ، ووصولاً إلى العصر الحاضر .
هذا الكتاب الذي يتعلق بنظرية الشريعة الإسلامية وممارستها وتحولاتها عبر الزمن ، لا يتبوأ قمة حقله العلمي فحسب ، بل يتبوأ قمة البحث العلمي عموماً .
