لكى نوفر لهذا الكتاب العمق العلمى المطلوب، فقد رأينا أن نختار عملاً روائياً واحداً لنلتمس فيه آثار المدارس الأوربية المختلفة، ونرى أوجه الشبه والاختلاف بينه وبينها وكيفية استخدامه لأساليبها وتقنياتها ومفاهيمها، فاخترنا ثلاثية نجيب محفوظ، لأنها تعتبر من أفضل الأعمال الروائية التى كتبت فى أدبنا الحديث وأكملها بناء.
ولقد كثرت المقولات حول تأثر نجيب محفوظ -خاصة الثلاثية- بمدارس غربية ثلاث:
-المدرسة الواقعية الفرنسية متمثلة فى بلزاك وفلوبير.
-المدرسة الطبيعية متمثلة فى زولا.
-مدرسة الروائيين الانجليز الادوارديين مثل جلزورذى وبنيت.
وبما أن الثلاثية تعتبر رواية واقعية فقد كان طبيعياً أن يقع اختيارنا على أعمال لبلزاك وفلوبير باعتبارهما صاحبا الاتجاهين الرئيسيين للرواية الوقعية الفرنسية فى أزهى صورها وأكملها. ولكى تكون دراستنا نصية محددة فقد اخترنا أوجينى جرانديه لبلزاك التى يعتبرها النقاد جوهرة الكوميديا الإنسانية ومدام بوفارى لفلوبير التى تعتبر من أعظم تراث الأدب الفرنسى فى بنائها الفنى وتكاملها. ولما كانت المدرسة الطبيعية هى إحدى روافد الواقعية فقد اخترنا روايتى المطرقة والفريسة لزولا باعتبارها خير أمثلة الرواية الطبيعية.
وقد قسمنا بحثنا إلى ثلاثة فصول طبقا للوحدات الأساسية المذكورة فى هذا التعريف والتى يقوم عليها بناء الرواية وهى الزمان والمكان والمنظور، فأفردنا فصلا لكل من هذه الوحدات الثلاثة، فالفصل الأول يدرس البناء الزمانى فى الرواية وترتيب العناصر الزمنية، والفصل الثانى يدرس البناء المكانى وأساليب تجسيد المكان فى النص الروائى ودلالته، والفصل الثالث يدرس بناء المنظور وتجسديه فى أساليب التشخيص.
