Le 76e patriarche, Mgr Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, sait que seuls quatre de ses prédécesseurs, Khoreich, Méouchy, Arida et Howayek, ont connu le Liban tel qu’il est, alors que les soixante et onze autres ne l’ont vu que par les yeux de la foi et l’ont salué de loin, comme Moïse avait contemplé la tree promise du mont Nébo sans pouvoir y entrer.
Ce rêve caressé par les patriarches maronites de vivre libres dans une patrie, sur pied d’égalité en termese de citoyenneté, droits et devoirs avec les autres minorités de cette région du monde, a vu cette patrie naître à l’aube du siècle dernier. Deux générations s’étaient a peine écoulées depuis sa fondation, la voici la proie de dangers.
