"ليس من عادة الرّهبان أن يكتبوا مُذكرات، إنهم مثل المسيحيَّين الأول لا مدينة ثابتة لهم... ويعتبرون ذواتهم عُمَّالاً بطالين... لكنَّ الدفاع عن الإنسان والوطن والأرض والحرّيّة فرض ذاته فرضاً، لأنَّه دفاعٌ عن الكيان وعن مجموعة القيم الَّتي عاشها يسوع وعلَّمنا بالمثل والقدوة أن نعيشها...".
هكذا يستهلّ الأبَّاتي نعمان الجزء الأول من مذكراته الّتي جاءت لتزيح اللِّثام عن مرحلةِ مفصليَّةٍ وعصبيةٍ من تاريخ لبنان الحديث، تمتدُّ من النصف الثاني من الستينات وتنتهي بإستشهاد الشيخ بشيْر الجميِّل.
كشف الأباتي نعمان عن هذه الأحداث بصدقيَّة المؤرخ الموضوعي، لاحظاً ما اكتنفها من تداخلاتٍ محليةٍ وإقليميةٍ ودوليةٍ، وبواقعيَّة جريئةٍ تجعلنا نلامس محاورها وأبطالها.
اعتمد الأباتي في هذه المذكرات على "المراقبة المشاركة" (Observation participante) مشركاً بالتالي المجتمع اللبناني في الأحداثِ التي عاشها، ضابطاً تلك المحطاتِ بالشواهدِ والإثباتات، مستنداً إلى مراجع موثوقة.
وهو لا يتوانى عن ممارسةِ النقد الذاتي في بعض المواقف التي عاشها شخصياً، حيث كان فاعلاً ومشاركاً فيها، فنراه يلامسها ويعيشها ثم يبتعد بعد ذلك عنها، فيعاينها عن بعد زمنيٍّ ومسافاتٍ مكانيَّةٍ مرفقةً بالتحليل الذي ينسابُ تلقائياً إلى ذهن القارئ.
إنها مذكرات تاريخيَّة تضيء على الأحداث وتصوبُ تاريخ هذه الفترة العصيبة وتندرج في ذاكرة اللبنانيين، وهي لبنةٌ تسهم في خلقِ الوعيِ المجتمعيِّ المشتركِ.
