هذا الكتاب ليس وصفاً تحليلياً أو تنظيراً سياسياً لأحداث جرت وتجري على امتداد الشرق الأوسط، بقدر ما هو سرد تاريخي لوقائع سياسية كبرى شهدتها المنطقة، وشهدها الأستاذ عبد الحليم خدام من موقع عمله الدبلوماسي والسياسي على مدى نصف قرن.
وتأتي أهمية كتاب "التحالف السوري الإيراني والمنطقة" من ناحية الوقائع التاريخية التي دأب المؤلف على تقديمها للقارئ كما هي، متوخياً الدقة والموضوعية، ومن ناحية فهم أبعاد وخلفيات استمرار التحالف الاستراتيجي الوثيق بين دمشق وطهران.
لقد استطاع الأستاذ خدام، من خلال هذا الكتاب، الذي يعد باكورة مذكراته السياسية، أن يقدم تعريفاً أعمق لسياسة الجمهورية الإسلامية وآليات تفكيرها وعملها، أنطلاقاً من كونه مهندس العلاقات السورية الإيرانية في مراحلها الأولى.
وطالما كانت السياسية الإيرانية ولا زالت في عهد الجمهورية الإسلامية، تشغل بال الكثيرين في المنطقة، بالنظر إلى تداخل مساحاتها الجغرافية مع سلسلة الأحداث التي وقعت على مر التاريخ القديم والمعاصر، فإن مجموعة العناوين والوقائع التي تضمنتها فصول الكتاب الثمانية وفقاً لتسلسلها الزمني، سلطت الضوء على تلك السياسة بواقعها الراهن، دون أي لبس أو تحوير، إن الحديث عن التحالف السوري الإيراني الممتد لأكثر من ثلاثة عقود، رغم التناقض الإيديولوجي بين عقيدتي النظامين، ليس حديثاً عابراً، فهو ومن دون أدنى شك، حديث ذو شجون، له أسبابه العديدة ومحطاته الكثيرة التي يقف عندها هذا الكتاب بالوقائع والوثائق.
