في هذه المرحلة العسيرة من حياة العرب، حين تزداد المعاناة ويتعاظم القهر وتُنهب الثروات ويضيع الحق ويُعتدى على الأرض ويُشتت الناس بفعل عدو ظالم وتضيع الحدود بين الخطأ والصواب وبين العدل والظلم وبين الكرامة والمذلّة وبين السيادة والعدوان، في هذه المرحلة يقف المواطن متسائلاً إلى أين تسير هذه الأمة وما المصير؟
هل الهيمنة الأجنبية، وهل الاستبداد والظلم قدر لا رادّ له؟ وهل يستطيع العرب أمّة أو شعوباً الاستمرار في قبول هذه الأوضاع السائدة التي تغلق فيها أبواب الأمل بفعل هيمنة خارجية أو تسلط داخلي؟
في هذه المرحلة المظلمة من تاريخنا، حين هجر الكثيرون أمتهم وارتضوا أن يكونوا عوناً لأعدائهم على أمتهم يفرّطون بالحق ويتنازلون عن الأرض ويقبلون الهيمنة الأجنبية، في هذه المرحلة يصبح من حق، بل من واجب، كل عربي أن يتساءل: متى تنتهي المحنة؟ وكيف؟
إذا كانت حالة التفكك القومي شكلت الخطر الأكبر الذي يواجه العرب، فإن خطراً آخر يهدد الوحدة الوطنية في معظم الأقطار العربية، وهو خطر التركيز الصهيوني والأجنبي على إثارة النعرات والعصبيات العرقية والطائفية والمذهبية..
إضافة إلى ذلك هناك عوامل أخرى ذات تأثير كبير ليس على العرب ومستقبلهم فحسب، وإنما على أمم الأرض كلها، وهي انتهاء الحرب الباردة والعولمة الأميركية والوضع الاقتصادي الدولي والغزو الثقافي...
لقد عزمت بعد تفكير عميق، على الكتابة حول مجمل هذه القضايا ليس في إطار سرد الوقائع والأحداث، بل عبر دراسة وتحليل الأسباب واستخلاص ما يمكن أن يفيد أجيال هذه الأمة وهي تتحسس طريقها نحو المستقبل، آملاً أن أكون قد قدّمت مساهمة في تحديد الرؤية واختيار الطريق.
