اختلف المؤرخون على المعنى الحقيقي لكلمة مصر. فنرى مثلاً المؤرخ العبقري سيد محتاس يصف لنا المعنى اللغوي لهذه الكلمة فيقول إذا مزجنا بين الميم والراء، تصبح "مر" بمعنى: "طعم شديد المرارة.. أما إذا مزجنا الميم مع الصاد، تصبح "مص" بمعنى الإمتصاص.. وأخيراص، إذا مزجنا مزجنا الكلمتين معاً، تصبح "مص المر" أى ارتشف من كأس المرارة، طبعا السيد محتاس قد جاء بالمفيد ليتحفنا -بلغته المرمرية- بهذا المعنى اللغوي الهام، ولكن في الحقيقة هل كان السيد محتاس صادقاً؟ كانت الإجابة (نعم).
