من المسلم به أنّ الإعلان العالمي لحقوق الإنسان يعتبر المرجع الأساسي والرئيسي لهيئة الأمم وللدول الأعضاء تستند إليه للوقوف في وجه التيارات والحركات والسلوكيات الرامية إلى احتقار حقوق الإنسان وإدار كرامته. إلاّ أنّ الأمم المتحدة لم تكتفي بهذا الإعلان فوسّعت من أعمالها، وأصدرت العديد من الإتفاقيات والقرارات حول الحقوق والحريات التي تتعلق بأوضاع إنسانية خاصة كالطفل والمرأة واللاجئين العمال والسجناء والمعاقين إلخ.
ففي مجال حقوق الطفل أصدرت الإتفاقية العامة لحقوق الطفل لسنة 1989 وفي مجال حقوق المرأة أصدرت إتفاقية القضاء على جميع أشكال التمييز ضدّ المرأة بالإضافة إلى إتفاقيات وقرارات أخرى... إلخ.
وفي مجال حقوق اللاجئين أصدرت الإتفاقية الخاصة بوضع اللاجئين والبروتوكول الخاص بوضعهم. وفي مجال حقوق أعمال أصدرت العديد من الإتفاقيات والقرارات لعلّ أهمها الإتفاقية المتعلقة بشأن الحد الأدنى لسن الإستخدام، والإتفاقية بشأن النهوض بالعمال والحماية من البطالة، والإتفاقية الدولية لحماية حقوق جميع العمال المهاجرين وأفراد أسرهم... إلخ.
وفي مجال حقوق المعاقين أصدرت الإعلان الخاص بحقوق المعوقين والإتفاقية الدولية لحماية حقوق الأشخاص ذوي الإعاقة... إلخ.
وفي مجال حقوق السجناء أصدرت القواعد النموذجية الدنيا لمعاملة السجناء والمبادئ الأساسية لمعاملة السجناء... إلخ.
