فسحة من الراحة يجدها سيرغيبانو حين تتخذه ماريّا، ابنة المالك، عبداً خاصّاً لها، لكن ذلك لا يمنع عنه مصير رفاقه من الجوع والفقر في مجتمع تضطر فيه النساء إلى بيع أجسادهن بغية العيش، ولا يمنع عنه أيضاً شعوره بواجب الدفاع عن المزارعين وتحصيل حقوقهم.
رواية توثّق حياة مزارعي الكاكاو في البرازيل خلال ثلاثينيات القرن الماضي، فتكشف عن الفقر والعبودية والعنف الإجتماعي الذي ولّدته ديكتاتورية الإقطاع.
جورجي أمادو (1912- 2001) من أهم كتّاب الأدب البرازيلي، تُرجمت أعماله إلى نحو خمسين لغة.
