ينقسم الكتاب إلى اثنى عشر فصل حيث يتناول المؤلف فى الفصلين الأول والثانى نشأة محمد على ، وثورة القاهرة والحملة الإنجليزية على مصر ، والدفاع عن مصر قبل وصول محمد على ، وأما الفصل الثالث يتحدث فيه عن الحملة المصرية فى شبه الجزيرة العربية ، ثم الفصل الرابع يتناول فتح السودان وأسباب الفتح والحملة ، وفى الفصل الخامس يحكى ميلاد الجيش المصرى ، وفى الفصلين السادس والسابع يتناول حملة شبه جزيرة المورة، والجيش بين حربى المورة والشام ، وفى الفصلين الثامن والتاسع يتناول التعليم العسكرى والجيش بعد 1831 ، ثم يتحدث عن حملة الشام فى الفصل العاشر ،وفى الفصل الحادى عشر يتناول المؤلف الدفاع الساحلى فى أيام محمد على الكبير ، وأخيرا الفصل الثانى عشر يتحدث عن الجيش فى أيامه الأخيرة.
